Gael & Diego Attack Social Issues with Genre Fare

A couple years ago there were rumors about Diego acting in a horror film called "Child's Play". Based on the article below from Indiwire, it looks like the project is back, and that Diego will be producing it instead.

Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna Attacking Social Issues with Genre Fare

A production announcement about a new English-language genre franchise coming from Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna's Mexico-based Canana Films caught my eye this morning for a number of reasons. While the use of genre--and horror, in particular--to attack contemporary social issues isn't new ("Night of the Living Dead" anyone?), I'm particularly intrigued by what's going on in Mexico right now, and Canana, specifically, as they also backed Gerardo Naranjo's narco-thriller "Miss Bala," which is really a thinly veiled scathing indictment of Mexico's culture of violence and superficiality.

The new film is called “Child’s Play,” and according to Variety, stars Vinissa Shaw ("Two Lovers") and Ebon Moss ("Damages") as a husband and his pregnant wife who travel to Mexico for some quiet, only to be attacked by maniacal children. The film will be directed by "Makinov," a mysterious Russian-American who has lived in Mexico and wears a mask and a heavy worker jacket called a Makinov. "Through anonymity I can do anything, tackle any genre and not be afraid to fail," Makinov is quoted as saying, according to the trade.

Canana producer Pablo Cruz told Variety: "Genre allows you a freedom that you don't get when you are telling a story of a country in poverty or the mountain life of two kids."

While it's difficult to know yet how seriously "Child's Play" will address issues of poverty in Mexico, it's certainly coming at time when the Mexican public is embracing highly political filmmaking.

According to the story below, Diego and other cast members will be at the screening of “Casa de mi Padre" on February 29, at the South Beach Comedy Festival in Miami.

Will Ferrell cameo at South Beach Comedy Festival

Because you can never have too much funny at the South Beach Comedy Festival, a Feb. 29 screening of “Casa de Mi Padre” at the Colony Theater (1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach) will include the red-carpet arrivals of its stars, Diego Luna, Genesis Rodriguez and “introducing, Will Ferrell” (pronounced Feh-RELL).

A send-up of every telenovela cliché you can think of, “Casa de mi Padre” opens in theaters nationwide on March 16. The stars of the film are scheduled to arrive on the red carpet at 8 p.m., with the invitation-only screening at 9 p.m.

A group of well known Mexican actors, including the internationally acclaimed Diego Luna, launched an ad campaign on Monday, that is calling on people in Mexico and elsewhere to empathize with victims of the war on drugs, and to support their struggle for justice and peace.The campaign, called En los Zapatos del Otro or “In Someone Else’s Shoes,” exposes Mexicans to video and radio ads in which professional actors, speaking in the first person, narrate the chilling testimonies of Mexico’s drug war victims and also talk about what the victims feel when they are in a march, seeking justice from government authorities.

Diego Produces "Miss Bala"

With a title that translates as the punning "Miss Bullet," the Mexican film "Miss Bala" is based in part on the real-life story of a beauty pageant winner who was arrested alongside a drug gang and paraded before the media amid accusations of corruption behind her crown.

It aims to not only be a provocative, thoughtful action film for the art house, looking at the overwhelming problems of the drug-trafficking epidemic in Mexico, but "Miss Bala" also marks an ambitiously bold step forward for director Gerardo Naranjo.
